Celtics Make Big Move After Impressive Interim Season

Mazzulla Earns the Job After Leading Celtics to Success

Boston, MA - The Boston Celtics have named Joe Mazzulla their permanent head coach, the team announced Thursday. Mazzulla, 34, has been the Celtics' interim head coach since September after Ime Udoka was suspended for the entire 2022-23 season for violations of team policies.

Under Mazzulla's leadership, the Celtics have been one of the most successful teams in the NBA, posting a 34-12 record, which is second only to the Milwaukee Bucks. The Celtics also reached the NBA Finals last season, where they lost to the Golden State Warriors in six games.

"Joe has done an exceptional job as our interim head coach," Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in a statement. "He has a great basketball mind, he's a strong leader, and he has the respect of our players and staff. We are confident that he is the right person to lead our team going forward."

Mazzulla is a seven-year NBA veteran who played for the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Brooklyn Nets. He retired from playing in 2019 and joined the Celtics' coaching staff as an assistant the following year.

"I am honored and humbled to be the head coach of the Boston Celtics," Mazzulla said in a statement. "This is a dream come true for me. I want to thank the Celtics organization for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. I am committed to winning an NBA championship for the city of Boston."
